Editing for Professionals

Your use of English is a Compliance Issue – New Course in Editing Helps Avoid Legal and Other Pitfalls

High Performance Training – one of Ireland’s leading training organisations – has launched a specialised course dedicated to the needs of those who publish and distribute their own written documentation.

The course is designed with twin objectives:
  • to ensure that all your written documentation is professionally prepared and presents the best possible public image of your organisation
  • to ensure that nothing you put into print will come back to haunt you later, either in terms of public dissatisfaction or (increasingly relevant) falling foul of regulatory or compliance bodies.

Editing for Professionals delivers the technical skills to review and edit documentation so that common grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors are identified and eliminated. Participants also learn how to develop a "fresh eye" so they can easily spot and remedy structural errors, improve the overall quality of a document, and eliminate waffle.

Successful editing depends on a clear understanding of the needs of the target audience and the writers' objectives. A systematic approach to writing, using KISSSS (Keep it Short, Simple, Strong and Sincere), combined with an analysis of the document using ROCS (focus on Reader, Objective, Content and Structure), will provide participants with the skills for professional editing.

High Performance Training Managing Director, Loretto Mara, says: “Your written word is your legal bond. In a world where civil and even criminal court cases hang on the wording of a single document, it is vital that statements made in writing are vetted for accuracy, effectiveness, and veracity before they are presented to third parties.”

The course is devised and presented by Writing Skills Programme Director Sarah Marriott, who has worked as a writer and sub-editor with the Irish Times, has trained Irish Times editorial staff, and lectured in sub-editing at the Dublin Institute of Technology. Sarah also co-authored Common Errors in English, a prescriptive guide for native and non-native English speakers.
