Course Aims:

Does your website get results because it’s clear and user-friendly?  Or are you afraid that users get lost or overwhelmed because there is so much text?

In today’s highly competitive world, your organisation’s website is your shop window – and it’s more important than ever that your site is simple to use and that key information is easy to access.

Writing for the web is very different from other kinds of writing. Research shows:

  • Reading from computer screens is about 25% slower than reading from paper.
  • You should write 50% less text than for hard copy.

On this highly practical course one-day course, you will learn how to apply this research to create a reader-friendly website that makes an impact and achieves your objectives.

Sarah Marriott, a former Irish Times journalist with a proven track record in training in the private and public sectors, will guide you through the essential steps in the craft of writing for the web.

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand how users ‘read’ websites
  • Apply this information to your own site
  • Adapt hard copy for the web
  • Understand how to achieve buy-in from readers
  • Use techniques to attract scanners’ attention
  • Write clear, concise content for the web
  • Achieve a reader-focused style and structure
  • Explain complex information quickly, clearly and concisely
  • Recognise errors and potential problem areas
  • Understand the issues involved in making online writing accessible to all readers (according to the National Disability Authority)
  • Edit your own and colleagues’ web content
  • Take away a 25-page resource pack with online links to further resources
  • Who should attend?

This in-depth look at writing for the web is for anyone involved in generating and/or editing web content. It is also suitable for anyone who wants the confidence and skills to analyse their own site with a view to improving content and accessibility.

    Methodology

Our training methods are based on research that shows how adults learn best. This includes showing respect for their experience and expertise – and encouraging them to share problems and solutions.

We believe people learn most from doing not listening, so each learning point is consolidated with practical exercises (individual, pairs and groups) and participants are encouraged to explain how they will apply these new skills in their work. Participants also create a personal action plan, to help them to focus on how they will use the techniques they have learned.
