CREATIVE WRITING SKILLS FOR BUSINESS SUCCESS

We all write as part of our daily working lives, but how many of us maximise the opportunity this presents to impress or even inspire our intended audience? How many of us sell our ability and potential short?

The reality is that most business writing – whether a simple e-mail or a detailed report – is formulaic, unoriginal and often boring, and even a little bit of imagination and creativity will have a material effect on how the writer can inform, motivate, and influence those they communicate with on a daily basis.

Course Aims:
This course covers many objectives and provides a wealth of creative writing knowledge, skills and techniques. It is designed as a standalone course for those wanting to learn how to apply creative writing to their work and personal lives, and who enjoy seeing things from different perspectives. It targets core negative beliefs around writing and our ability to make ourselves heard in a positive and effective way.

The course is aimed at people who wish to develop (or discover) this skill with confidence. No previous writing skills are required, just the prospect that you might have a natural talent that could benefit from professional support and advice.

Course Content Includes:

• Clustering, Mapping, and Charting: Use of the right and left sides of the brain.
• Writing on one subject from different points of view. This develops awareness and understanding of what others’ opinions and needs are.
• Making the unfamiliar familiar: The importance of knowing one’s subject very well.
• Stream of consciousness writing to unblock the creative free flow
• Guided Imagery: Using relaxation techniques to access detailed images. This promotes clear thinking.
• The Fragmentary Quote: Pushing out the boundaries of our imagination.
• Fact into Fiction: Showing that fiction is always a mixture of what we have experienced and what we have imagined.

Programme Director - Geraldine Finn

Geraldine Finn is a published poet and experienced Creative Writing trainer. She produced and presented the Arts Programmes on Mid West and North West Radio Stations, which featured poetry, short stories and drama.

She has worked with writing groups in Ireland and the U.S. including: the Pat Schneider Writer Exchange Programme in Massachusetts; the Western Health Board; Women on Air (a joint initiative of University College Galway and the Independent Radio & Television Commission); primary and second level teachers; and inmates in Castlerea Prison.

She was shortlisted for the Hennessy Sunday Tribune Poetry Award and has contributedto THE SHOP, a magazine of poetry; Cathal Bui Selected Poems, and BADAL Anthology.

Geraldine is currently working on her new poetry collection and facilitates writing workshops throughout Ireland.
